DESCRIPTION
Provide tobacco cessation telephone counseling to clients calling the California Smokers' Helpline. Acquire a thorough grasp of all aspects of smoking cessation, including the psychology of addictive behavior, physiological aspects of withdrawal, and behavior modification techniques that facilitate the quitting process. Answer incoming calls to the program, following established procedures and protocol. Transition into intake, assess needs of callers and provide counseling and/or other services as appropriate. Counsel assigned clients as scheduled. Manage a heavy caseload following established clinical protocols and productivity guidelines. Assist clients in developing and implementing effective strategies to quit smoking or other tobacco use. Create and sustain a supportive client-focused environment for the change of addictive behavior.
Gather and record detailed and accurate information on assigned clients. Maintain thorough, up-to-date, and confidential records of counseling sessions and clients' status. Participate in various research studies, applying protocols and procedures appropriate to the subject populations. Counsel and screen clients fluently in English and one of the following languages: Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin or Cantonese. Provide assistance with counselor training. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups, including professional and nonprofessional staff and research subjects. Ability to manage a heavy caseload in an unhurried, organized, and efficient manner. Ability to remain composed and productive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
Must be able to work variable hours, evening shifts, weekends, and some University holidays.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be bilingual in English and one of the following languages: Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin or Cantonese.
Demonstrated ability to create and sustain a supportive client-focused environment for the change of addictive behavior.
Basic psychological acumen. Ability to understand and follow research protocols, including determining subjects' eligibility to participate in studies, randomization procedures, and coding of data.
Thorough grasp of all aspects of smoking cessation, including the psychology of addictive behavior, physiological aspects of withdrawal, and behavior modification techniques that facilitate the quitting process.
Demonstrated skill in conducting detailed telephone interviews, and ability to simultaneously use programmed databases such as Delphi.
Demonstrated attention to detail in both written and spoken form, as well as ability to work under research protocol guidelines. Ability to maintain thorough and confidential records of client progress.
Strong experience with computers and office applications, such as Word, Excel and database programs. Ability to assist in training new counselors in counseling protocols and use of computer programs
Proven skill in communicating in a helpful, informative, and supportive manner on the phone, and in providing appropriate/effective interventions based on accurate assessment to a diverse group of study participants.
