Family Program

Can't study English because of young children?  IES Hillcrest Family Program allows parents to take English classes by providing concurrent Todder Classes.  You can study English with the peace of mind that your toddlers are just a few steps away.

Adult English Classes allow parents a break from childcare while helping them develop language skills they need for living in the United States.  Classes are offered twice a week, depending on the subject.  Classes will focus on active learning and encourage student interaction, which develops speaking and writing skills.  Students will also engage with a variety of listening and reading material, including newspapers and television.

Classes are held at two levels:
Level 1                  High Beginner - Low Intermediate
Level 2                  Intermediate – High Intermediate

Toddler Classes are for 2 to 4 year-olds who are potty-trained.  Most people think that it is very easy for children to learn languages.  However, learning even one language is a process that takes many years.  Putting toddlers in the right learning environment is important for success later in school.

At this age, toddlers are developing language, motor, and social skills.  This is an ideal age to begin language learning.  Interacting with other children in class is a great way to practice English as well as learn about social roles.  Moreover, the child can learn to be independent while having Mom or Dad nearby.  Toddler Classes are multi-level and adapted to the age of each child.  The class focuses on developing vocabulary through social interaction and physical activities, such as counting and singing.  Book reading (teacher reading to the children) is also a regular part of class because it helps develop vocabulary.  Of course, snack time and play time are included as part of the learning environment.

Many parents have questions about raising a child in multilingual environments.  Will the child become confused by different languages?  Will the child lose his/her native language by learning English?  Many children throughout the world grow up with two or more languages without any problems.  In fact, a child's first language actually helps them learn a second language.  Studies have shown that children are able to keep the languages separate.  For more information on raising bilingual children, go to these websites: http://www.pbs.org/parents/readinglanguage/articles/multifamilies/main.html
