LSAT은 35분이 소요되는 5개의 Section과 30분이 소요되며 점수에 반영이 되지않는 작문 section으로 나눠집니다. 작문을 제외한 나머지 다섯 section은 Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, 두개의 Logical reasoning 그리고 Experimental Section이다. LSAT의 성적은 최저점수 120점과 최고점수 180점 이랍니다.

LSAT은 TOEFL과 GRE와는 달리 아직은 컴퓨터로 시험을 치르지 않고 종이에 답을 기입하는 시험입니다. 그러므로 수능시험을 보는 한국 학생들에겐 친숙한 시험으로 점수가 모든 문제에 고루 분배되어있고 대부분에 사람들에겐 문제를 다 주어진 시간 안에 푸는 것이 어렵기 때문에 쉬운 문제를 먼저 파악하고 맞추는 것이 유리하죠.

Logical Reasoning은 법과학생이 갖춰야 할 문장 이해력과 논리적인 사고력을 보는 section으로 문제들은 가정, 결론, 추론, 그리고 문장을 더 설득력 있게 또는 약하게 만드는 지문 파악, 마지막으로 논쟁하는 방법 등을 알아보는 것을 요구합니다. Logical Reasoning은 LSAT 시험 전체에 절반을 차지하는 섹션이기 때문에 다른 섹션에 비해 좀 더 시간을 투자해서 실력을 향상시킬 필요가 있습니다. 그러나 문제의 종류가 다양하기 때문에 여러 번 시험을 풀어봐야 모든 문제유형을 알 수 있습니다.  

Analytical Reasoning은 분석능력을 평가하는 시험으로 임의의 상황에서 관계분석 후, 새로운 정보를 이끌어내는 유형으로 4개의 임의의 상황마다 각각 5개에서 7개의 문제가 주어집니다.

Reading Comprehension은 4개의 긴 문장들이 주워지고 각 문장은 약 450자 정도의 단어와 5개에서 8개의 문제가 나옵니다. 문장들은 주로 사회과학, 인문과학, 자연과학, 그리고 법에서 출제됩니다.  Reading Comprehension은 한국사람이 풀기엔 너무 읽을 분량이 많기 때문에 모든 문장을 다 읽고 풀기 보다는 4문장 중에서 가장 자신 있는 3 문장을 설정하고 먼저 푼 다음에 마지막에 남은 문장을 읽고 찍는 것이 많은 사람에겐 점수 향상에 도움됩니다. 또 다른 방법은 문장을 다 읽기 전에 문제에 유형을 먼저 보고 어떤 답을 찾아야 할지 기억하며 푸는 것 또한 점수를 향상 시킬 수 있는 방법이죠. 그러나 어떤 방법이 맞는지는 여러 번의 실험을 통해서만 알 수 있습니다.

Analytical Reasoning의 예
A housing committee will consist of exactly five representatives, one of whom will be its chairperson. The representatives will be selected from among a group of five tenants - F, G, J, K, and M- and a group of four homeowners - P, Q, R, and S. The following conditions must be met:
-The committee must include at least two representatives from each group.
-The chairperson must be a representative belonging to the group from which exactly two representatives are selected.
-If F is selected, Q must be selected.
-If G is selected, K must be selected.
-If either J or M is selected, the other must also be selected.
-M and P cannot both be selected.

Logical Reasoning의 예
If all beaches were publicly owned, we would have to rely on government funds to maintain them. It is true that more people would have access to the ocean and beaches, but at what cost? If the beaches are not cared for adequately, soon there will be nothing left worth having access to. We should consider carefully before nationalizing more coastal property.

LSAT에서는 어느 섹션이 먼저 시작하는지 알 수가 없으며, 중간에 10분의 휴식이 주어집니다. 위 도표에 있는 섹션 외에도 experimental section이 3섹션 중 하나에서 선택되어 추가되는데 어느 섹션이 experimental인지는 구별이 불가능합니다.
