얼마 전 한 사립학교에서 한인 유학생 간에 몸싸움으로 한 명이 숨지는 사고가 발생했다. 다분히 감정을 조절하지 못했기 때문에 일어난 불상사이다.

사실 한인 학생들이 다수 재학하는 학교에서 이와 유사한 마찰이 항상 존재한다. 미국에서 교육을 받으면서 한국식 문화를 억지로 접목하려다 보니 일어나는 현상이다.
감정표현은 매우 중요하다. 그리고 그 같은 감정표현 뒤 대응은 더욱 중요하다.

미국에서 어릴 때부터 자란 아이들은 친구들과의 마찰이 발생했을 경우 어떻게 행동해야 하는지에 대해 대부분 잘 알고 있다. 간단히 정리하면 문제발생 때 우선 그 장소를 떠나는 것이다.

그 뒤 그 내용을 학교에 알릴 것인지 등 다음 대응을 생각하도록 한다.
이는 자녀의 안전이란 측면에서 결코 간과해서는 안 되는 문제이다. 때문에 집에서 어릴 때부터 이런 상황에 대비해 충분한 훈련을 시킬 필요가 있다. 그 중 하나가 감정을 표현할 줄 아는 능력을 키워주는 것이다.

이런 것들을 제대로 모르면 잘못된 행동 또는 부정적인 방법으로 자신의 감정을 처리할 수가 있다. 반대로 어릴 때부터 이를 제대로 익히면 문제발생 때 말로 해결할 수 있는 방법을 찾게 된다.

감정표현 훈련은 부모가 그것들을 표현할 수 있는 단어들을 알아야 한다. 그 단어들을 잘 모른다면 구글(Google) 웹사이트에 들어가 ‘feeling words’를 검색어로 치면 많은 단어들을 접할 수 있다.

그 다음에 각 단어의 뜻으로만 감정을 표현하는 훈련을 한 뒤, 한 단계 나아가 왜 그런 감정이 들었는지를 얘기하도록 하고, 다음에는 그런 감정의 문제를 어떻게 해결할 것인지를 찾는 순서로 반복하면 효과가 크다. 일련의 이런 훈련을 통해 대화 속에서 표현하는 능력을 키우도록 해야 한다. 다음은 알아두면 유익한 주제별 감정표현 단어들이다.
