3. Jesus' Birth (Wise Men)
Matthew 2:1-12
During the time of King Herod, Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea.
After His birth, the wise men from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,
Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews?
We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.
When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.
He called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law and asked them,
Where is Christ to be born?
In Bethlehem in Judea,
For this is what the prophet Micah has written:
But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.
Then Herod called the wise men secretly and found out from them
the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
Go and make a careful search for the child.
As soon as you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.
After they had heard the king, they went on their way,
and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them
until it stopped over the place where the child was.
When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary,
and they bowed down and worshiped him.
Then they opened their treasures and presented him
with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod,
they returned to their country by another route.

[Scene 1]
Three wise men from the east gathered in a field at night,
and looking up into the sky, discussed with each other.
Wise Man 1 : Let's see if we can find the star of the king of kings tonight.
Wise Man 2 : Just because we try does not mean
the star will show itself to us.
The heavens must have a special reason.
Wise Man 3 : God would surely reveal to us the star if we try to find it
with all our hearts and all our minds.
Then, a bright star appeared far west towards the land of Israel.
The wise men are intrigued and excited as they talk to each other.
Wise Man 1 : Why, that bright star that showed up in the far west,
I don't think i've ever seen it before.
Wise Man 2 : The far west leads to the lands of Judea.
How is it that it appeared over Judea?
Wise Man 3 : Isn't there a prophesy about the Messiah
who will be the King of Kings being born in Judea?
Wise Man 1 : I will prepare gold as a gift in worship of the King of Kings.
It is in hope that it will assist the newborn King in anyway financially.
Wise Man 2 : Then I will prepare incense
as a gift in worship of the prophet-like King.
incense is especially effective in treating wounds.
Wise Man 3 : And I will prepare myrrh
as a gift in worship of the priest-like King.
Myrrh is required in a priest's ordainment ceremony
and time of offering.
Wise Man 1 : Now then, shall we hurry to the west of Judea?
Wise Man 2 : The King of Kings must have been born in a palace,
so it is right that we fin Him Jerusalem.
Wise Man 3 : The distance from here to Judea is far and rough.
It will be quite a long journey.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : (looking at each other and at the skies)
Praise the Lord for awaiting the birth of the King of Kings
and showing us a sign of His coming into the world.
May God be with us in this long journey.
The three wise men prepare their gifts and set of on their journey.
[Scene 2]
The wise men arrive at Jerusalem at dusk and immediately heads toward Herod's palace.
They show respect in front of King Herod and begin to speak.
Wise Man 1 : We are from the far east
and we have seen a star signifying the birth of a Jewish King.
Wise Man 2 : We have come here to find Him and give worship to Him.
Wise Man 3 : And we want to know where we can find the King of the Jews.
Herod and all the people in the palace are shocked by these words and start to talk.
Herod : (to himself)
A King of the Jews is born?
But my son was born years ago...
Does that mean someone else has been born to overthrow me?
Priest : (to himself)
Alas! Has the time come?
Is this the end of King Herod and us?
Teacher of the Law : (to himself)
This could also mean the birth of the Messiah.
If it was about a mere king King Herod is still alive and well.
General : (to himself)
The King of the Jews?
Bah, King Herod is enough for one king.
Anyone looking to overthrow our king will only bring a sword
to their neck.
The wise men observe their unexpected reaction and look at each other, not feeling right.
Wise Man 1 : The birth of the King of the Jews does not seem
like good news to them.
Wise Man 2 : They don't look like they know
the King has even been born......,
Wise Man 3 : Then have we come to the wrong place to ask?
The wise men once again ask King Herod.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : Your Grace, do you know where
the King of the Jews is born?
King Herod is uncomfortable and gathers his priests and teachers of the law.
Herod : What are the wise men talking about?
I am the king of the Jews, and yet they ask
where the king of the Jews is born?
Priest : Judging by the gold, incense, and myrrh they brought
and their coming from the east,
I think they are talking about the Messiah being born here in Judea.
Herod : (is surprised with what he hears)
Wh-What?
The Messiah is born here in Judea?
Teacher of the Law : Yes, it seems so.
If they could see the star from such a far place as the east
then it's for sure that all this points to the birth of the Messiah.
Herod : (is very disturbed by the fact)
This is a very big situation we have here.
Everyone, gather closer.
If the Messiah is born here in the lands of Judea,
where would He be born?
Priest : If the Messiah is born in Judea
He will be born in the Bethlehem, the town of David.
Teacher of the Law : That is correct.
It is said by the prophet Micah,
"But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel."
Herod : Do you mean the poor and small town Bethlehem?
(pauses then to himself)
Heh, Bethlehem's a small town. He won't be too hard to find.
General : (nods his head)
Even if this King is indeed born,
everything will work out perfectly
since He's born in little Bethlehem.
Herod : (gestures the wise men to come forward and speaks to them
quietly)
According to the priests and the teachers of the law
the King of the Jews will be born in Bethlehem.
Bethlehem is not far from here,
so you'll be able to find Him easily.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : (bowing heads)
Thank you, your Grace.
Herod : Wait, wait. Before you go, I have one question...
When did you see the star that showed the King's birth?
Tell me exactly when.
Wise Man 1 : The time we first saw the star back in the east
was a year and some months ago, your Grace.
Wise Man 2 : The road here from the east was a long and rough one;
it took some time to get to Jerusalem.
Wise Man 3 : Now, we should take our leave to Bethlehem
and go worship the King of the Jews.
Herod : (steals a glance at the General)
May you go in peace.
Make a careful search for the child, and as soon as you find Him,
report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : (looks at each other)
Thank you, your Grace.
May God bless you.
Herod and the General look at each other, nodding their heads,
while the priest and the teacher of the law look on, puzzled.
[Scene 3]
As the wise men leave the palace and the bright star shines, and they are very excited.
Wise Man 1 : Look! Isn't that the star we saw back in the east?
Wise Man 2 : Why, yes it is! It's that star.
Wise Man 3 : We were wrong to think
that the King of the Jews would be born in a magnificent palace.
Wise Man 1 : Yes, not only that but wasn't something strange
back in Herod's place?
Wise Man 2 : I felt the same way.
It was strange that I could not see the joy of the birth
of the King of the Jews
in the faces of the priest and teacher of the law
who knew the writings of the prophets.
Wise Man 3 : I found it very suspicious when King Herod gave
the general a glance, too.
It's best we be careful of them.
Now that aside, the bright star is leading the way to Bethlehem.
Shall we go?
[Scene 4]
The star the wise men saw back in the east led them from Jerusalem to Bethlehem
and stopped above the house where baby Jesus was in.
Wise Man 1 : Is it that the King of the Jews is in this small cozy house?
Wise Man 2 : Since He lives in a house and not a palace,
the King of the Jews in whom God rejoices in must be a humble King.
Wise Man 3 : Let us hurry in and worship the King.
We traveled for over a year on this long and tiring journey,
how we waited for this moment to come!
The wise men enter the house and find baby Jesus, Mary, and Joseph together
and bow down in worship.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : (while on their knees in worship)
Oh, King of the Jews, in whom God rejoices in,
we worship you, and receive our praises!
Then they opened their treasures
and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
Joseph : Welcome.
May I ask, who might you be?
Mary : You seem to have come a long way from here...
Wise Man 1 : Yes, we have come from the far east.
Wise Man 2 : We have waited a long time for the birth of the King
of the Jews.
Then we saw a star in the sky signifying His birth
and have come all the way here.
Wise Man 3 : We were mistaken to go to the palace in Jerusalem
but came to Bethlehem after the priest and teacher of the law spoke
of the prophet Micah.
Joseph : You must have had a hard time coming here.
Mary : But what is the gold and the frankincense and the myrrh for?
Wise Man 1 : The gold is a gift for the one who will become the King
of Kings.
Wise Man 2 : And the incense is a gift for the prophet-like King.
Wise Man 3 : And last, the myrrh is a gift for the priest-like King.
Joseph & Mary : (look at each other)
Oh, I see.
Thank you very much for the gifts.
Wise Man 1, 2, 3 : It is time for us to get back the east.
We'll take our leave.
After the wise men left baby Jesus and stayed at a hotel to sleep,
God appeared in their dreams, telling them not to go back to Herod.
Voice : Do not go back to Herod.
Once they heard His voice the wise men immediately woke up
from their sleep.
Wise Man 1 ; Did you hear God speak to you in your dreams?
Wise Man 2 : So you have heard His voice, too.
Wise Man 3 : We all have been warned from God not to go back to Herod.
We should hurry and take another road.
Wise Man 1 : The Lord is pleased with the birth of the King of the Jews in Bethlehem,
but it isn't the same with the people in Herod's palace,
so we should make haste.
Wise Man 2 : (raises two hands to the heavens)
The Lord who has shown us the coming of the King of the Jews
is worthy to be praised! Hallelujah!
Wise Man 3 : (raises two hands to the heavens)
The Lord who has chosen to reveal the Messiah's birth
in small and humble Bethlehem and not in big
and magnificent Jerusalem is faithful and forever good! Hallelujah!
The wise men followed God's warning and returned to their country by another route.
