Most Common Topics

  • Personal Statement – Any topic can work and there may be multiple choices for the prompt. These essays are typically main essays that work for multiple schools or applications (e.g. Common App, Coalition App, Apply Texas).
  • Why Us – The most common supplement. It comes in many forms, but at its core is the question of why you want to attend the school.
  • Why Major – A close cousin of the why us essay, the why major essay specifically focuses on why you are interested in the major you are intending to pursue.
  • Describe an Activity – A common type of essay that asks you to describe one of your activities.
  • Additional information – An optional section found on many applications that allows you to include information you were not able to fit within another part of the application.

Other Topics

Other prompts are categorized into the following 8 topics, in order of how frequently the topics appear

  • Background – Your identity, your history, or your family history.
  • Intellectual Curiosity – Learning you do just for the fun of it.
  • Overcoming Obstacles – Times you’ve faced and overcame challenges – either related to your mindset, family life, community, activities, or schooling.
  • Goals – Your goals for the future – either in college or life after college.
  • Leadership – Situations where you found yourself leading.
  • Helping Others – Experiences where you’ve helped others within your school or broader community. This can be volunteer community service or any situation where you needed to support one or more people in need.
  • Passions – What you are passionate about.
  • Religion – What your religion means to you (applies to religious schools).

Less Common Essays

These are essays some students may need to write or choose to write

  • Test Optional – Essays which may be required if you are applying test optional.
  • School Visit – Essays which may be required if you visited a school’s campus.
  • LGBTQ or Gender Identity – Optional essays if you want to share about identifying as LGBTQ.
  • Criminal Charges or Conviction – Essays you may need to write if you were charged with and/or convicted of a crime. Typically only applies to felonies, but applies to misdemeanors in some cases.
  • School Discipline – Essays you may need to write if you were disciplined by your school (e.g. academic probation, suspension).
